We need pesticides to fight hunger

WRONG: for 2 reasons:

1. We already have enough food!

We already produce enough food to feed everyone in the world: we produce more food per person today than ever before. Lack of food is not the problem.

Then why do so many people die of hunger?
People go hungry and die because they are too poor to buy enough food. We don't need more food: we need fair access to the food we already have. Many people in the developing world cannot afford enough food to keep themselves and their families alive.

More information about hunger is available from Food First: www.foodfirst.org

2. Pesticides are mostly used on export crops for the First World
Not for food for the Third World

Most of the pesticides that are used in the Third World are used on export crops which go to the people of the First World. For example:

  • Over 90% of all the pesticides used in West Africa are used on crops for export
  • In Latin America 75% of pesticides are used by farmers growing crops for export, and only 11% are used by small farmers.

Most small farmers who are just trying to grow their own food can't afford to buy pesticides.
