Pesticide Poisoning

At least 3 million people are poisoned by pesticides every year;
more than 200,000 people die. (World Health Organisation estimates)

Thailand

A survey of 250 hospitals showed that 5,500 people were admitted for pesticide poisoning in one year (1985). 348 people died.

China

1n 1994, 42,800 cases of pesticide poisoning were reported. 3,900 people died. (Many cases are thought to be because of illegal, home-made pesticides.)

Brazil

Santa Catarina state: 28% of farmers said they have been poisoned at least one time;
Parana state: 7,800 people were poisoned from 1982 to 1992.

Latin America

10% - 30% of agricultural workers have symptoms that may be organophosphate poisoning (a pesticide that attacks the nervous system.)

Egypt

In the 1990's, more than 50% of cotton workers suffered from pesticide poisoning.

The Philippines

50% of rice farmers have become sick because of using pesticides.

Malaysia & Sri Lanka

7% - 15% of farmers have been poisoned at least one time.

Venezuela

1980 - 1990: 10,300 people were poisoned. 576 people died.
