London, 1978. Sweeping, scholarly review of half a million years
of regional history with close examination of colonial depredations
from Islanders' viewpoint. Well written, but detail tends to get confusing.
The Pacific Way - Tupouniua, Crocombe and Slater,
Eds., South Pacific Social Sciences Association, PO Box 5083, Suva,
Fiji, 1975. Oratory in print, from papers given by prominent Islanders
to a mid-seventies 'Pacific Way' seminar. Welcome relief from more usual
'expert' view of what's best for the Islanders.
Pacific Islands Yearbook - Pacific Publications,
Sydney, 1981. Appearing about every five years, this yearbook is
a unique but uncritical melange of country-by-country facts and statistics
- if you have the patience to find them.
Development and Dependency - Anarshi Good and Mortimer,
Eds., OUP, Melbourne, 1979. Useful collection of academic articles
on Papua New Guinea. Takes broadly marxist view of capitalist underdevelopment
and indigenous class formation. Hardly bedtime reading, but makes a
change from decades of anthropological studies.
