Letters Update
THE
GARDENS
'The Gardens' was once a smart quarter of the Sri Lankan capital Colombo.
Today it is a decaying slum. This issue of the New Internationalist is
a personal impression of life in this community. It looks at the daily
struggles and frustrations of the people who live there and also at their
efforts - with the help of UNICEF and the Sri Lankan government - to improve
their way of life. Originally this was a report commissioned by UNICEF
from one of the editors of the New Internationalist Peter Adamson. We
publish it here in a format that is unusual for this magazine and we hope
that readers will enjoy this different approach.
