The Class SystemTHE RAINS

Twelve months ago New Internationalist published ‘The Gardens’ – an account of life in the slums of Colombo, Sri Lanka – commissioned by UNICEF and written by Peter Adamson. ‘The Rains’ is the second such report, set this time in Yatenga Province, Upper Volta, where recent years have seen an erosion both of the soil of the Sahel and the confidence of the Mossi people. It tells the story of one day in the life of Assita and her husband Harmade Ouedraogo as the rains begin to fall.
