AIMS
To
awaken within the Indian woman an awareness of her right to
control the number of pregnancies she has and the consequent
size of her family.
To
provide a full range of family planning services, including
surgical contraception and abortion, regardless of caste,
creed or economic status
METHODS
In
Northern India the Societys seven Marie Stopes Family
Planning Clinics are promoted through an aggressive social
marketing programme with advertising in the press, the cinema
and hoardings etc. A comprehensive information, education
and communications project takes our message to the community
using puppet shows. street theatre and songs about planned
families and the effects of excessive population growth. In
the rural areas of Uttar Pradesh we hold family planning
camps into which we integrate the activities of other
broad-based development agencies.
SUCCESSES
The
above has been accomplished in just three years since our
registration as an Indian Voluntary Agency in 1979. We have
now firmly established ourselves as a caring family planning
organisation which is respected by both the population at
large and the Government of India
FAILURES
The
expansion of our rural extension programme has been slow due
to inadequate donor support for this aspect of our programme.
FUTURE
PLANS
A
first trimester abortion training programme for registered
medical practitioners is to be launched later this year. We
are investigating the possibilities of establishing a contraceptive
social marketing project in Uttar Pradesh. In due course we
hope to establish a Family Planning Training Programme to
include simulation games and teachers information packs.
HELP
NEEDED
We
desperately need volunteers to show support for our cause.
We are keen to receive suggestions from interested
individuals and agencies with ideas for innovative family
planning programmes.

AIMS
To
help children regardless of race, religion or political status.
To
provide technical and financial aid to developing countries.
To
initiate community programs in developing countries that can
improve the quality of child care, education, nutrition, preventive
medicine, housing and agriculture.
To
help Canadian Indians through community programs and university
scholarships.
METHODS
CANSAVE
cooperates with agencies with which it has existing relationships
to help evolve integrated community-based programs from traditional
child welfare programs.
CANSAVE
initiates projects through the appointment of a Field Director
to plan, assess community needs, select projects, train
local leaders, evaluate programs and create community organisations
that will provide ongoing support
SUCCESSES
Three
major programs have been initiated in the past four years.
Accomplishments in Haiti include a portable water system,
community farming and nutrition centre. In St Lucia and Grenada
autonomous community-based organizations have evolved from
traditional child welfare programs. In Nicaragua 350 children
were helped through the Chavalito program for
abused/abandoned children and expansion now includes day care,
a goat farm, a brick factory and participation in a
reconstruction project to rebuild homes and schools destroyed
by hurricanes. In Upper Volta extensive groundwork has been
laid in the Ziou
region
for water projects and preventive medicine.
FAILURES
Premature
involvement in the Nicaragua program. Sectoral programming
proved an ineffective method of development Consequently an
integrated methodology is being developed.
FUTURE
PLANS
Consolidation
of international programming will allow for more efficient
use of funds. This will be achieved through termination or
phasing Out of some programs and by focusing attention on
existing programs to encourage them to develop and expand.

and staff working together raise over 54 million a year. We

AIMS
To
communicate through jogging, running and competing that the
end of world hunger is an idea whose time has come.
To
create an environment that supports individuals who choose
to do something about ending world hunger.
To
enroll dedicated athletes to be in the forefront of the fight
against malnutrition and starvation worldvvide.
METHOD
By
wearing the distinctive World Runners T-shirt vest with its
End World Hunger logo, its message becomes an
increasingly familiar sight at events and marathons.
A
co-ordinating committee sets the targets and agrees which
organisations will benefit from the sponsorship of individual
runners.
SUCCESSES
Over
one million US dollars raised world-wide for organisations
concerned with ending starvation. Four hundred UK members
have raised over £30,000.
World
Runners completed the 1981 London Marathon, raising £8,600
for Somalia and East Africa relief. World Runners from several
countries completed the Paris Marathon in aid of Oxfam, the
Hunger Project, and other organisations. £7,600 was raised
for Action Aid by World Runners competing in the 1981 New
York Marathon. and 86 World Runners completed the London Marathon
last year and were individually sponsored.
FAILURES
While
recognising that only governments and international agencies
can meet human need on the massive scale needed, they will
only act as fast as the people they represent
move them. In spite of encouragement, approval and support
from many quarters. World Runners has not yet made the impact
of which it is capable.
FUTURE
PLANS
To
extend World Runners into every town and county in the
UK. To see that it becomes a part of every sports centre,
club and athletics association in the country. To promote
fund raising activities and sponsorship for hunger organisations.
charities and educational bodies dealing with Third World
problems.
HELP
NEEDED
Volunteers
to become Area Representatives. People, whether athletes or
not, to enroll members, arrange meetings, and to plan local
activities. Life membership £7.
