In black and white
Images of Africa - helpless, savage, starving,
ridiculous -
have changed hardly at all since Victorian
days. And still
they prevent us from seeing Africans as real people.
|

Court jesters. Arnin and Bokassa were ridiculous as well as dangerous. But it
was Western governments that supported them in thcir excesses, not ordinary Africans.
|

Spot the monkey. A British comic from 1912.
|
|

The eyes have it. A 1984 child
sponsorship advertisement.
|

Racist pseudo-science from the turn of the century.
|
Frames from 1980s American
comics Ka-zar the Savage (above)
and Conan the
Barbarian.
