S.A.L.T. L.l.C.K.
P.O. Box 77
Rumuruti
Kenya
AIMS
To assist the pastoral people of Kenya to become integrated into the
national economy withoutjeopardizing their cultural heritage and traditional livestock
raising systems. To reduce tension between the resilient low energy systems of pastoralism
and specialization and high technology. To assist pastoralists to broaden their economic
base through vocational training.
To serve as a centre for pastoral studies to collect, record and
disseminate information on the traditional strategies of pastoralists. To provide a source
of improved genetic material to pastoral herds.
METHODS
By establishing a commercial ranch we hope to reduce dependency on
outside aid agencies while providing a training centre to teach both traditional and modem
husbandry techniques in a culturally appropriate setting.
By inviting elders from various tribes to participate in the planning
of vocational curriculum we hope to establish rapport between tribes. Opening channels of
intertribal communication is seen as a strategy to alleviate some of the tensions and
conflict in northern Kenya. Through the establishment of a pastoral study centre we hope
to support anyone interested in doing ethnographic work with pastoralists.
SUCCESSES
Although newly organized we have success-frilly registered our agency
within Kenya to maintain administrative functions and costs in country. We have received
encouragement of our proposals from various pastoral communities as well as from UNESCO,
Ford Foundation, Technoserve, etc. We have shared our concern for pastoralisms
future by attending relevant conferences.
FAILURES
We have been unable to raise sufficient funds to obtain a ranch upon
which to develop donor independence. We have failed to con-convince policy makers that the
pastoral system is viable and deserves preservation.
FUTURE PLANS
To continue working with government and development agencies to
determine the significant potential of the pastoral system. To develop a newsletter that
can help co-ordinate and inform the pastoral development agencies.
HELP NEEDED
Share your pastoral experience. If you believe in aiding and preserving
the pastoral heritage assist us with funding ideas.
