BANGLADESH SOLIDARITY
Bangladesh solidarity groups overseas tend to be aligned to the two main political
parties. Groups monitoring human-rights abuses are therefore the most obvious points of
contact - Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch.
WORTH READING/VIEWING
Ya Basta! a Zapatista Solidarity Website, is well worth a look, containing
the latest news on Zapatista actions, the full text of their communiqués and
some excellent photos. Find it on: http://www.ezln.org/
Another website worth investigating is http://www.squall.co.uk/home.cfm
This is the homepage of Squall, an excellent quarterly magazine bulging
with resistance news, action ideas and contact points. It is fast becoming biblical
for alternative activists in Britain. Reach it at: PO Box 8959, London N19 5HW,
UK. Tel: +44 (0)171 561 1204.
e-mail: squall@phreak.intermedia.co.uk
Undercurrents is a non-profit group producing alternative news videos.
Each new quarterly edition showcases stories shot by activists on their own
camcorders. It is British-based but increasingly international in outlook: Undercurrents
4 includes an innovative TV ad about economic growth by Canadian outfit
Adbusters and a piece on Shell's devastation of Ogoniland; as well as a glimpse
of the miners' action in a minister's back garden mentioned on page
7 (though unfortunately not his lavender pyjamas). Undercurrents 5
is imminent. The group also co-ordinates a camcorder action network. They are
at Box 30, 16b Cherwell Street, Oxford OX4 1BG, UK. Tel: +44 (0)1865 203662.

George McKay's Senseless Acts of Beauty is newly published by Verso.
This intriguing analysis of current direct-action-related movements - free festivals
and New Age travellers as well as eco-radicals - aims to show the roots of such
alternative action reaching back through punk anarchism to the hippie counterculture
of Theodore Roszak and beyond. It is in the Establishment's interest for cultural
revolts to be dismissed as ineffectual by succeeding generations. As was true
for feminists, uncovering roots is all-important - it helps today's activists
not to feel isolated, to draw heart and strength from previous generations'
resistance.
