Worth reading
Solar Hydrogen Energy: The power to save the earth by John O’M Bockris,
T Nejat Veziroglu and Debbi Smith (Optima 1991) is one of the best popular,
well-informed books about. The theory is inspired and the presentation zappy,
with great cartoons by Heidi Weiss. A Solar Manifesto (James and James,
1994) is an impassioned polemic by Europe’s leading politician-advocate
of renewable energy, Hermann Scheer. The writing’s turgid at times but
the ideas are robust, lucid and uncompromising. Renewable Energy: Power for
a Sustainable Future edited by Godfrey Boyle (Open University, OUP 1996)
is an excellent, accessible resource that manages to be both thought-provoking
and tell you how the things actually work. Renewable Energy: Sources for
Fuels and Electricity (Island Press, 1993) edited by Thomas B Johansson,
Henry Kelly, Amulya KN Reddy, and Robert H Williams, is a big global batch of
academic essays, with some interesting case histories. The Future of Energy
Use (Earthscan 1995) by Robert Hill, Phil O’Keefe and Colin Snape has
more of a textbook feel. It deals authoritatively with conventional energy systems
as well as renewable ones, and is hot on the economics. Power Surge by
Christopher Flavin and Nicholas Lennsen (Earthscan, 1995) is a thoroughly researched
guide to the coming energy revolution that leaves one with an overwhelming feeling
of hope. Finally, slightly at a tangent but still connected, is the formidably
comprehensive, useful and fun Millenium Whole Earth Catalog (Harper Collins,
1994) edited by Howard Rheingold. This is the alternative lifer’s illustrated
bible, with the alternatives ranging from the more imaginative sexual practices
to organic gardening, eco-tourism and sustainable energy systems.
