WORTH READING
For an informed and impassioned account of the politics and the science of climate change, look no further than Ross Gelbspan’s The Heat is On (Perseus Books, 1998). The Carbon War by Jeremy Leggett (Allen Lane/The Penguin Press, 1999) is a blow-by-blow account of the machinations of the fossil-fuel giants. Contributor David Keys’ Catastrophe (Century, 1999) provides a fascinating reconstruction of how climatic disaster in the Dark Ages changed the political face of the world. Factor Four by Ernst von Weizsäcker, Amory B Lovins and L Hunter Lovins (Earthscan, 1998) is jam-packed with reader-friendly information on energy-efficient technologies. The March/April 1999 special edition of the journal The Ecologist covers all aspects of the climate crisis and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies’ 1999 edition of World Disasters Report offers an in-depth analysis of last year’s natural catastrophes. Greenpeace’s booklet Answers from the Ice Edge provides a good insight into how all-embracing climate change can be – in the Arctic in this case. Finally an excellent teaching pack from Canada, including a video on renewable energy options – Climate Change: Awareness and Action by Dave Mussell, Juleta Severson-Baker and Tracey Diggins (Pembina Institute for Appropriate Development, 1999).
