and Dennis Keeney with different viewpoints on the pesticide industry.
The Global Politics of Pesticides: Forging Consensus from Conflicting Interests
by Peter Hough (Earthscan, London 1998) is a rather academic but informative
account of the current state of the pesticides debate; while Living downstream:
an ecologist looks at cancer and the environment by Sandra Steingraber
(Virago, London 1998) is a lyrical and scientific account of the cancers caused
by pesticides in the US. Our Stolen Future by Theo Colborn, 
Dianne
Dunmanoski and John Peterson Myers (Abacus, London 1996) provides
a shocking exposé of the effects of endocrine disruptors. Barbara Dinham’s
The Pesticide Hazard: a Global Health and Environmental Audit (Zed Books,
London 1993) is a thorough analysis of the global effects of pesticide use.
State of the World 2000 (Earthscan, London, 2000) has a good chapter
on POPs. Sweeping the Earth: Women Taking Action for a Healthy Planet
edited by Miriam Wyman (Ragweed Press, gynergy books, Ottawa 1999) is
a feisty look at pesticide campaigns in different parts of the world.
And don’t forget: Rachel Carson’s classic Silent Spring (Penguin, London, 1962). Finally, One World’s website for kids: www.oneworld.net/penguin/index.html has some lively, accessible material on pesticides.
